Deter wasps by using their instincts against them. Wasps try to use the vented area to access the hives to rob honey while Bees easily reorientate to the side entrances to enter and exit the hive.
Provided with 3M sticking tape for quick application, nails or screws can be used for more permanent use. 
Covered access has the added benefit of reducing water ingress and snow covered entrances. Sliding cover can be easily taken off in spring/summer flows and replaced as needed when pests become an issue.
